When the App Store was originally announced we were excited about the games and tools that would flow from it, but equally we hoped the third party programmes would address core functionality famously missing from the handset itself. And now it has...

No we don't have copy and paste, MMS or video recording but that other old chestnut and saviour of drivers everywhere: voice dialling. Yes indeedy Apple has rather surprisingly (given its disappointingly tight restrictions on many other proposed tools) given the thumbs up to Makayama's 'VoiceDial' a tool perhaps well known to owners of original jailbroken iPhones as it has been knocking around since 1.1.x firmware.

How it works is frighteningly simple: voice samples can be recorded for any contact in your address book and once added speech algorithms identify the tags you added. This method also eliminates potential language barriers and, according to Makayama "It's as easy as saying, 'John Smith' or 'Call Anne' ". Personally I'd recommend the latter labelling system since you don't want to be talking about a friend then see your phone automatically call him to listen in on what you're saying!

As with all App Store, err... apps automatic notifications will alert users to future upgrades and Makayama promises they will be free. This is a good thing too since VoiceDial costs a hefty £14.99 - about as expensive as App Store gets currently gets - even if feedback to the jailbroken edition was pretty good.

Those wavering should checkout a video of VoiceDial in action. Happy deliberating...

It was never freeware Stelph, the same charge was made for jailbroken iPhones - it just included a free trial period.

I hope this isn't giving other phone makers any ideas. Selling a new premium phone with basic features missing and then charging (a lot) extra to get them later.
