The bravery of the original 3 Skypephone was quite exceptional given network's traditional fear of VoIP and it came to represent the progressive nature 3 has adopted over the 18 months. So it's of little surprise an upgrade is on the way...

According to Just Another Mobile Phone Blog (the name, not me being petty) the latest model has recently passed through that great technological glass window also known as the Federal Communications Commission (FFC) and here's snaps to prove it:

Codenamed the 'WMA8709' and dubbed the 'IMP2', it will apparently be made by Amoi and while it looks mighty similar to its predecessor and specs are thin on the ground it will allegedly get a welcome bump to a 3.2MP camera. Strangely however there is apparently no 3G which is somewhat confusing (this is '3' after all) but perhaps since this was uncovered on the FCC it is a US-specific edition? Still, the all critical WiFi is aboard.

Given the sense of similarity between the original and its successor I'd take a stab at pricing and suggest the generous £49.99 on PAYG/free on contract are likely to stay in place. FFC-status also suggests this could be appearing sooner rather than later, so keep headsets crossed Skype fans.
