Despite our reservations about the HTC Touch Diamond both it and its sliding Qwerty brother, the dubiously named Touch Pro, are two of the most anticipated handsets of the year. Now we can also reveal when and for how much you can get the latter...

Moving in on Amazon's well worn position as arch technology slipper, Play.com has followed up its OCZ bargain SSD revelations by listing the Touch Pro Sim Free in its full glory for an eye watering £549.99 including delivery. It says the model will be released on 29 August.

Also rather interestingly Play.com is the first to offer a look at the well hidden side view of the Touch Pro (why we're going with its blurry shots - here is our clear one) and it is obvious why HTC has been so reticent to offer anything other than front facing shots: it's a chunker! To be fair most Qwerty sliders are, but given the svelte lines of the Diamond there were high hopes the quoted 18mm for the Pro would be only at its 'thickest point'.

Still, refreshing the specs it isn't hard to see the appeal of the Pro: 2.8in VGA touchscreen display, 7.2Mbit HSDPA, WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity, integrated GPS, a zippy 528MHz CPU, doubled up 256MB RAM/512MB ROM, a microSD expansion slot, FM tuner, multimedia playback and 3.2MP camera with front mounted VGAer for video calls. Battery life is good too at 300 minutes talktime and 320 hours on standby, just try to forget that 158g weight.

Of course iPhone fans will also point out the 8GB and 16GB PAYG versions of the iPhone 3G are likely to be just £299.99 and £349.99 respectively but unless you're comfortable will jailbreaking then that's not an unlocked handset.

You say potato, I say... well, potato actually. Who says potarto?!
