Android Phones Facing Delays Into 2009

Android may be seen by open source aficionados as the saviour of the mobile phone market but its creator is causing handset makers more than a few problems.

According the Wall Street Journal, the search giant has developed a nasty habit of continually tinkering with its platform and this is causing difficulties between software developers and the ultra security cautious networks. As a result the WSJ is claiming many Android handsets will now be delayed until 2009. This already follows a delay from the second half of 2008 to Q4.


Biggest causalities among the networks are said to be Sprint in the US and China Mobile, the country's largest operator, though T-Mobile USA is still expected to make its 2008 deadlines with an HTC-made model (regularly referred to as the 'Dream').

The news is likely to be greeted with a (secret) sigh of relief by major rivals with Apple's mobile Mac OS X platform probably the most immediately affected since it appeals most to tech heads and early adopters.

Still, with more than 30 partners now in the Google camp since Android's November unveiling, the threat remains. It's just taking a little longer than expected...

Should I carry on waiting for Android handsets or get the HTC diamond pro? Then install android when its been bedded in (late 2009).

I wouldn't hold your breath. It takes around 18 months to develop a handset, the Android bunch were trying to do it in less than 12 months so I was not surprised. More delays ... more
