We're used to getting info on most new handsets a long time before they hit the market so Samsung has pulled off something of a coup with the 'Steel'...

Hitting the UK next month exclusively on Vodafone the model comes out of the blue and - while not making our knees overly wobbly - is a nice, solid offering.

Styled (as the name would suggest) in a metallic finish and a striking resemblance to the Soul, the slider is a midrange follow up that doesn't quite hit the high notes of its peer (3.2MP v 5MP camera, no touchscreen navigation) but still manages to pack in HSDPA, Bluetooth with A2DP and a large 2.2in 262k colour display. A microSD slot is also in there, to bolster the (unspecified) onboard memory.

"With the Samsung Steel we wanted to create a multimedia handset with a timeless appeal and premium feel" said Mark Mitchinson, Samsung Mobile VP for the UK and Ireland.

Unlikely to cost anything on most decent contracts, the only note of caution we'd sound is just how much the Steel will weigh? Still, if you haven't upgraded your handset in a while this could be a winner...
