Get your wallets at the ready...

According to a 'confirmation' from "someone very, very close to the 3G iPhone launch" Engadget says Apple will indeed announce the much anticipated handset during Steve Job's 9 June WWDC keynote speech and, more importantly, global availability will ensue almost immediately afterwards.

The source even gives the specific example of Spain where it says the new iPhone will be on sale from 18 June at the grand opening of Telefonica's megastore in Madrid with nationwide availability the next day. Other European countries are said to have similar launch schedules.

Interestingly Gizmodo also goes on to state that the phone will no longer be sold at a single fixed price point with Apple at last allowing telcos to bring in subsidies depending on the size and length of contract taken out by a user. Furthermore, many countries will find the 3G iPhone available from multiple networks providing customers with more choice and removing some of the motivation to jailbreak.

In sum it looks like Apple used the first year of the iPhone to feel out the markets and the device itself and is now confident of launching a global assault on the lucrative and expanding smartphone market.

All we can say is, come June: watch out world!
