Philips Latest To Prep iPhone Rival

With a new 3G iPhone all set to appear next month rival manufacturers will soon have something new to copy, but until then...
Philips has become the latest to jump aboard the iPhone imitation bandwagon with its leaked 'Xenium 800' handset: a large touchscreen semi-smartphone that is set to hit the market in Q3.

Virtually no specs have made it through at this stage but the screen looks a typical 2.8 incher while the UI appears heavily influenced in layout by the iPhone and in styling by the PS3 and PSP. WiFi and 3G are likely to be inside this wannabe while the resolution is reported as WQVGA (480 x 272). Landscape and portrait modes are supported too though it's unclear whether tech-de-jour, an accelerometer, will be behind it.
Historically Philips tends to do well at almost anything it turns its hand to - though that has yet to extend to mobiles. Whether the Xenium 800 has enough about it to cope with heavyweights like the HTC Touch Diamond, LG Secret or indeed the 3G iPhone itself given its launch timeframe is another thing entirely but expect Philips to keep chipping away...
