Yes, it's not quite as sensational as Gartner's claim that Apple has ordered 10m 3G iPhones, but it seems a lot more solid.

Ever industrious Chinese language paper the Commercial Times is reporting monster chip maker Foxconn (also known as Hon Hai) has won the much coveted contract to build the second generation iPhone. This shouldn't be a surprise to many as the company did a cracking job with the finish, strength and build quality of the original.

Interestingly, the CT is stating that in excess of 3m 3G iPhone units will be shipped in June adding weight to the tentative June/July release timeframe. Apple is getting ambitious too requesting 24-25m units during the device's life cycle (likely to be little more than 18 months). This would also suggest the Cupertino-based outfit is confident of hitting its lofty 10m unit goal for total iPhone sales by the end of 2008.

Lastly, CT believes the actual date of the 3G iPhone announcement will be on 9 June when Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference 2008 (WWDC 2008) kicks off.

Sounds as good a date as any to us...
