The practice of scheduling giant releases to avoid one another tends to be used by the film industry not the mobile phone market, but is RIM running scared?

According to Fortune Magazine RIM plans to delay the release of its much anticipated 3G smartphone (codenamed 'Meteor') because it is afraid of meeting Apple's second generation handset head on.

Of course RIM states it does not comment on unannounced products or "rumours and speculation" but unofficially it is said to be passing off the delay as due to the model's call quality - something many merely see as a smokescreen.

Should Fortune's report be on the money however it also raises another interesting question: Does RIM know something about the iPhone we don't? After all, June is when Apple is supposed to announce the 3G iPhone, an immediate launch was thought to be far less certain - or is it?

Speaking of unannounced products, RIM is meant to be readying its own iPhone rival in the shape of the 3G Blackberry 9000. The 9000 will be the company's first fully touchscreen model and is said to place a heavy emphasis on multimedia support, not just pleasing the suits and ties brigade.

It's going to be an interesting year...
