It's the release many iPhone owners wanted and every network dreaded...

Today sees the launch of excellent VoIP client Fring on Apple's much hailed handset and with it full access to low cost calls over WiFi and a professional IM chat client which is compatible with Skype, MSN, Google Talk, ICQ, Twitter, Yahoo! & AIM.

Described as a 'pre-release' which is being made available as a 'work-in-progress' the application requires users to have jailbroken iPhones since it is currently only available through Installer.app. That said, even at this early stage the software makes use of the full multi-touch environment and interaction with the brilliant virtual keyboard. Fring has also posted a video of iPhone Fring in action.

I quizzed Fring Online Marketing Coordinator Gil Regev about whether this release is basically a dry-run for an official version for the impending iPhone SDK. "I'll let you know as the news rolls in" was his cheeky response. Between you and me, I'll bet it is…

Fring for the iPhone is available immediately and step-by-step installation instructions have been made available, so what's stopping you…?
