It's had problems and even more problems but at last Nokia's revamped N-Gage platform is a go.

"We are live! The games, the devices, and the community are all here for you to finally get your teeth into. The Forums are back up and the new N-Gage application is here," announced the company - I suspect with as much a sigh of relief as a shout of joy.

The release comes just one week after Nokia closed the last beta of N-Gage on 27 March and v2.0 (technically 1.0 of the software) will initially work on all N Series S60-based handsets including the N81, N81 8GB, N82, N95 and N95 8GB with support to expand in future.

Users who install the free software will be able to download free game demos, purchase or rent full games and create an online profile enabling them to do battle with other N-Gagers online. Stand-out titles like The Sims 2, Worms World Party, FIFA 2008 and the classic Tetris will all debut over the next couple of months.

Will the software based N-Gage platform fare better than the dodgy hardware original? At this stage - delays now over - there seems no good reason why not...
