Since the SDK launch hackers have let it be known Apple is losing the battle to keep its handset locked. Talk about hammering home a point...

Just two weeks after the iPhone Dev Team bypassed security in an early pre-release of the so-called Firmware 2.0 (at the time labelled 1.2.0) like a knife through butter, the same group has smashed its way through an updated version within 24 hours of being leaked.

Announced - as usual - on the infamous Hackintosh forums, the firmware is now officially being referred to as '2.0 (5A225c)' and the Dev Team once again reiterated the point that hacking the handset has become so sophisticated that "Apple will not really be able to patch it this time."

As for changes since the last build, the more obvious addition is the option to put a dedicated 'Contacts' button on the main screen - a logical move and a button that has actually been locked into previous firmware but remain unused for some time. On top of this there are stability improvements while the Team reports "appstore and the itunes store cannot be switched on via prental (sic) controls anymore".

Of course, despite these continual breakthroughs it is unlikely Apple will give up on its efforts to lock (and relock) the handset due to its lucrative licenses with networks around the world. That said, if Steve Jobs is truthful with himself he surely knows...
