Apple's detractors would say the company is obsessed with controlling every single facet of our technological lives. Well, it may not stop there...

Unwired has uncovered no less than six Apple patent applications referring to what is called a 'lifestyle companion', essentially a fitness programme seemingly designed for the iPod touch and iPhone.

Seen as an application which can transform either device into a full health tool, it would potentially monitor heart rate, diet and suggest daily routines, shopping and even potential red flags all based on user input on their profession and living. Much like Nike+iPod, the trainer would be interoperable with iTunes and chart an individual's progress as well as incorporate the audio benefits of the current Nike system.

Seemingly designed to be modular, a customer would be able to buy either the entire companion or cherry pick elements most relevant/appealing to them.

Of course - as with many patents - this is all pie in the sky until an actual retail product is announced, but with GPS high on the list of second generation iPhone rumours Apple may indeed be slowly constructing a device capable of delivering such nagging comprehensive lifestyle advice. Whether we want our mobile phones telling us when to switch off the TV and go to the gym, on the other hand, is something else entirely...
