Well, they say Imitation is the best form of flattery...

Following on from LG's Touch Web and, well virtually every other manufacturer to release a handset since the iPhone, is yet another look-a-like with knobs on: Samsung's 'Haptic SCH-W420'.

With a 3.2in widescreen display it doesn't quite match the 3.5 incher on Apple's favourite child but it does - as seems usual for iPhone 'beaters' - sport 3G connectivity and DMB for mobile TV reception. Bluetooth 2.0 is stuffed in there too along with a mildly disappointing 2MP camera and Samsung's new finger-friendly user customisable UI - the official commercial is worth 1,000 words.

As for the inevitable marketing gimmick, it comes in the form of Sammy's Haptic touch technology which is an elaborate form of vibration feedback. In the W420's case it offers a mind boggling 22 different kinds of feedback (bored housewives will be pleased) each triggered by performing different actions (...ahhh you're with me now on the bored housewife analogy).

The W420 will take its usual place play Korean test bed market first with Samsung no doubt hoping to make a variant fly internationally at some point. Of course the F490 already does a pretty good job on this score, but hey - what's the mobile phone market if not cluttered...?
