Seems like Steve's harsh words have had the desired effect...

News is emerging that Adobe will indeed make a customised version of its mobile Flash player for the iPhone.

Speaking in a conference call, Adobe Chief Executive Shantanu Narayen said, "We believe Flash is synonymous with the Internet experience, and we are committed to bringing Flash to the iPhone. We have evaluated (the software developers' kit) and we think we can develop an iPhone Flash player ourselves."

This last line throws up particular interest given that the SDK has a number of pertinent restrictions including the elimination of third party apps being integrated directly into Mobile Safari (Apple wants performance to remain snappy). Of course Apple may well agree to bend the rules in this instance (it has in the past to bring Photoshop to the Mac), but if not Adobe could create a separate player that picks up on selected Flash links in Safari, BBC iPlayer style (above).

Of course the possibility remains that all of this has occurred because Jobsy secretly repented on the news that Microsoft has licensed Flash for Windows Mobile but you can bet your house on him never admitting that in public. On the flip side Abode may have become twitchy with news that Microsoft is developing its Flash rival, Silverlight, for the handset. Yep, it is all getting rather messy - though wonderfully competitive.

Expect touchdown(s) in June...

Update: Adobe is worrying somewhat now it has had a closer look at the SDK. CEO Shantanu Narayen now admits "...to bring the full capabilities of Flash to the iPhone Web-browsing experience we do need to work with Apple beyond and above what is available through the SDK and the current license around it."

Stop squabbling and sort it out guys!
