When it comes to picture quality, megapixels on cameras are about as misleading as contrast ratios on TVs. So praise be Samsung has at last put some substance onto its latest megapixel breakthrough.

On the surface what we have is an 8MP CMOS just like the last one but at 28mm × 15.3mm × 8.5mm it's the world's thinnest one as well. It's designed exclusively for use in cameraphones and with a 1600 ISO it should prove far better in low light conditions than the rubbish in most current handsets.

On top of this Sammy has also slapped in anti-shake capabilities and face detection technology - both of which are hitting high end Sony Cybershot phones - plus a 1-cm macro and support for that barmy 'smile shutter' system which enables the handset to automatically snap photos when everyone is smiling. Question of the day: should we always be grinning from ear-to-ear in photos...? Surely not.

Philosophical photographic musings aside, with mass production scheduled to begin in Q3/Q4 this year we should start seeing the first of Samsung's slim line 8MP cameraphones by Q1 next year (better than that beast premiered in '05).

Could this be the death of the fashion camera? I suspect only if you can afford a sizeable monthly tariff...
