Bit of a filler this in all honesty, but there is more to it than the headline.

Yes, Apple has confirmed that more than 100,000 iPhone developers have downloaded the beta iPhone SDK in just four days - that's pretty cool and it bodes well for native third party applications. Here's the waffle:

"Developer reaction to the iPhone SDK has been incredible with more than 100,000 downloads in the first four days," said Philip Schiller, Apple's senior VP of Worldwide Product Marketing (read: spin master). "Also, over one million people have watched the launch video on Apple.com, further demonstrating the incredible interest developers have in creating applications for the iPhone."

Fine.

What is infinitely more interesting however is that some of the identities of those developers are starting to come out. Flag waving the SDK in today's announcement, for example, are Namco and PopCap who will offer classics such as Pac-man, Galaga, Bejeweled, Peggle and Zuma while mobilePeople has already made its mobile search platform and mapping software compatible with the mobile Safari browser and has confirmed it will bring a native app to the handset.

On top of this we already know big hitters such as AOL, Electronic Arts and Sega are onboard and I suspect many others who are being kept quiet for the grand June launch. Something that will probably/hopefully/surely/please co-incide with a new 3G, GPS touting iPhone...
