It may look akin to Sony's A800 series Walkman, but Asus won't be unhappy if its latest Lamborghini product develops such a brand following...

The quad band 'ZX1' is under starters orders this week at CeBIT and the consumer orientated smartphone certainly looks ready to set pulses racing (sorry, my bad - twice).

Built around the millstone that is Windows Mobile 6, Asus has nevertheless thrown the kitchen sink at it with a redesigned interface, large 2.8in QVGA display and connectivity options galore including HSDPA, EDGE, WiFi, GPS and Bluetooth 2.0 with EDR. A 3MP camera with autofocus and second VGA for video calls is also a good step up compared to the usual fluff and at 115.6 x 59.4 x 13.2mm and 119g it's certainly petite for such a powerhouse.

With talk time stated as up to five hours and standby reaching 200 hours this looks a practical handset too while its 256MB flash and 128MB SDRAM can be augmented with the usual microSD cards making this multimedia friendly as well.

Sadly there's no pricing or release info at this stage, but I'd be surprised if it isn't targeting a late Q2 or early Q3 chequered flag. I'll stop now before puns overwhelm me.

Note That miserable pic is all there is to go on for now. Expect official shots to come screeching round the corner soon... (somebody stop me).

Update: Here are some proper pics. Yup, it's a looker...
