We will only have to wait three more days to know for sure, but already some intriguing details are leaking out about the iPhone's impending SDK.

Aside for the chatter that Thursday's launch will be merely an appetiser with the public release months away (fingers' crossed that's not true), the big talk is that Apple will be taking a two tone approach to iPhone third party applications depending on whether they come free or at a cost.

On the one side, retail apps will apparently go through a strict vetting process with Apple pawing over every detail and only enabling it to be purchased over iTunes (with Apple getting a cut) - this makes a certain kind of sense when it is likely to respond to high end apps like Lotus Notes or BBC iPlayer.

On the other, free apps are said to be given virtually no checks, perhaps practical since there are likely to be 1,000s upon 1,000s, though it is not clear whether they must still be downloaded and installed through iTunes. This latter detail will be key in determining whether jailbreaking and unlocking tools can be even more easily added.

All rather intriguing. 48 hours and counting...
