The rumours were right...

Following talk that the much-heralded and heavily anticipated February iPhone SDK would be delayed Apple has confirmed the date for its launch: March.

To be precise, 6 March is the day to write down in your diaries and it will be a 'Town Hall' event which will no doubt be beamed back to the UK press (inside scoop: it's like the US version just with far less journalistic whooping).

Interestingly - and in its typical minimalist style - Apple has left only the briefest of descriptions (that pic above, that's it!) but employing my best Interpretation 101 skills I'd suggest we have a development which is going to make this commercial handset far more of a hit with the business market (yeah, I'm good). So read into that the long awaited Lotus Notes App and hopefully some hardcore corporate-friendly-Blackberry-bashing Exchange support.

Any sort of tracking software would also hint at a future model with full blown GPS. A flash compatible Safari browser (with skyfire breathing down its neck) would be welcome too, but now I fear I'm diverging into Wish List territory.

One final note: with firmware 1.1.4 hitting iPhones and iPod touches this week and seemingly doing nothing - it will be interesting to see if it has indeed quietly laid the foundations for official third party apps. My bet is it has.

7 days and counting...
