So 'super' Tuesday has come and gone and that pesky iPhone SDK is nowhere to be seen (looks like the rumours were correct), not that Apple has too much to worry about...

On the back of a raft of new multi-touch, Penryn touting laptops, Steve Jobs' minions have declared that iTunes has become the second largest retailer of music in the US. This means it has surpassed old warhorse Best Buy with 50m customers buying over four billion tracks over the course of last year - 20m of those sold on Christmas Day alone. Scary.

"We'd like to thank the over 50 million music lovers who have helped the iTunes Store reach this incredible milestone," said Eddy Cue, Apple's VP of iTunes (not a bad job to have). "We continue to add great new features like iTunes Movie Rentals to give our customers even more reason to love iTunes."

As it stands, only perennial controversialist Wal-Mart now stands between Apple and top spot but given the way the world is going who'd bet against it snatching gold before too long?

And you thought you could never abandon your old CDs...

In related news the disappointment that was iPod shuffle 2GB is now shipping. *Very small cheer. Larger sigh*
