The end is nigh (read: today), but still time for one more gem...

Google has today launched a new version of its Android Software Developers' Kit (SDK) which sees the open platform take major strides forward. Version 'm5-rc14' (yep, it's snappy) replaces 'm3-rc37' (it's got that memorable tagging down) and makes clear steps towards producing a more commercially ready system.

As the shots above show, foremost version m5 (etc, etc) is about beautification. Gone are the Windows Mobile-esque blocky pop up menus and replacing it is a brand new slick UI with a more intuitive (dare I say) iPhone-influenced system with consistent finger friendly controls and smooth transitional animations (video here). Knight Rider fans will also love the new boot-up animation...

Also in m5 is the introduction of geo-coding as well as an updated Eclipse plug-in and new media codecs which add support for OGG Vorbis, MIDI, XMF, iMelody, RTTL/RTX, and OTA audio formats. Google has published a full list of changes for those looking to delve deeper.
