As world + dog knows Palm is in something of a mess, suffering interminable software delays, making ill thought out peripherals and spurning obvious partnership potential. Still, this could help...

Today Palm has announced it will at last bring its Centro handset to Europe. Centro was launched in the US exclusively on Sprint last October and is the company's smallest (106 x 53 x 17mm) and lightest (119g) smartphone to date and therefore one of its most appealing.

Despite its (relative) portability, the Centro is a fully fledged device incorporating a Qwerty keyboard, email, web browser, Google Maps and a productivity suite with the ability to create and edit Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents. As for the internals, you'll get a 1.3MP camera, Bluetooth 1.2, 64MB of onboard memory, a microSD expansion slot and multimedia playback. On the downside, a number of smartphone essentials these days are absent such as 3G and WiFi, while practicalities like a 3.5mm audio jack also remain elusive.

No telco partnerships have been announced (pending, probably?) but a sim-free unlocked version will go on sale at the end of February for just £199/€299 meaning it won't break the bank. Is this enough to turn things around for Palm...?
