Despite usually being obsessed with making the slimmest handsets on the market, Samsung has shown today that it also knows how to make a hard wearing one.

Completely wrongly described by the company as the "first ultra durable handset" - which only goes to prove its obsession with 'World's Firsts...' - the Samsung Solid nevertheless looks a more than capable performer. It is encased in a rubber body and has a military 'IP54' rating meaning it is has been passed as water, dust and shock-resistant.

While not exactly cutting edge, the Solid also has one stand out feature: SOS dialling which sends an alert message to a contact pre-selected in the phonebook when the volume button is quickly pressed three times. Cleverly, after this function is triggered the next incoming call with be answered automatically.

The built in flashlight should also prove useful.

Aside from this helpful pairing however the Solid isn't exactly feature packed with it's one 'luxury' being an integrated FM tuner. Other than that its GPRS connectivity, VGA camera, WAP 2.0, MMS, Bluetooth and Java functionality won't do much to tickle one's technological taste buds.

Still, as a model for those in demanding outdoor professions or even as a personal security handset the Samsung Solid excels. Exclusive to O2, it comes free on any monthly contract and with a PAYG price of just £59.99 it could be the smartest choice you'll make all year...
