While we tend to be more in favour of free solutions like AVG and Avast these days Symantec remains the world's largest antivirus company so getting its software working on Mac OS X Leopard was kind of a big deal...

'Norton AntiVirus 11 for Mac' is the product which rather shouts out this newfound compatibility and brings with it a whole range of new features the company hasn't put on the Mac platform before.

Keymost among them is a feature being dubbed 'New Vulnerability Protection' (reassuring name that) which Symantec says "provides an extra layer of protection against attacks that target software vulnerabilities. This signature-based protection prevents threats from infecting systems and deletes and blocks malware and viruses from installing when downloading pictures, music and software." In essence we're talking about cutting potential viruses off at source rather than from the desktop - very handy.

On top of this 'Inclusive Scanning' detects and removes viruses and worms, prevents virus infected e-mails from spreading and protects against attacks even from co-workers using the same networks. Finally the software itself has undergone a fresh lick of paint and Symantec claims its perennial Achilles heel: performance, has once more been improved following significant tweaking.

Norton AntiVirus 11 for Mac goes on sale immediately both through Symantec's online store and through select retailers for $49.99. If you're still into paying for your virus protection you know what to do...
