HSDPA is fast becoming a must on the latest mobile phones (come on Apple!) but while we may feel smug that data rates of up to 7.2Mbps in the UK are something to crow about they have just been blitzed...


The 'LTE/SAE (Long Term Evolution/System Architecture Evolution) Trial Initiative (LSTI)' (wow, that's verbose) has confirmed successful trials of an evolved version of today's mobile phone radio access technology, dubbed 'Super 3G' which enables download speeds of up to 100Mbps with 50Mbps uploads!

LTE/SAE Trial Initiative *must avoid RSI* launched back in May and is being standardised by the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) as a next gen mobile broadband technology. Alcatel-Lucent, Ericsson, France Telecom/Orange, Nokia, Nokia Siemens Networks, Nortel, T-Mobile and Vodafone formed the group and subsequently China Mobile, Huawei, LG Electronics, NTT DoCoMo, Samsung, Signalion, Telecom Italia and ZTE have joined so it is a pretty powerful (and acronym happy) collective.

Conditions for the tests themselves go into a lot of depth, but in essence it works and should it continue 'to work' when more complex demands are placed on it between now and 2009 then a commercial roll out is targeted by 2010.

Could our mobile broadband connections become faster than anything available to our homes in a little over two years? Well, it didn't take the mobile phone long to race past the land line...
