You have to give it to 3, its early life was difficult as the unfashionable network struggled to take hold but now it is undercutting EU roaming tariffs, offering £10pm mobile broadband and finally sexy handsets. Next on the hit list: PAYG.

'Flat 12' is the company's best contract free plan to date and offers a superb flat rate call charge of just 12p per minute to both mobile phones and landlines. It claims this beats its nearest competitor by over 20 per cent. 300 free minutes are also provided for calls to other 3 users along with 30 days free Skype to Skype VoIP calls and messages.

Furthermore the network has made voicemail free to access even if all credit has been used. This is an industry first and a genuine improvement which removes one of the major irritations of PAYG tariffs. Sealing the deal, should you need a new mobile phone 3 is also offering its entire range of Nokia, LG and Sony Ericsson handsets on PAYG with prices starting at just £89.99 for a Nokia 6151.

"PAYG customers will no longer be treated as second class citizens with this new 3 tariff," said 3's UK marketing director, the wonderfully named John Penberthy-Smith. "We're undercutting our competitors and giving people more reasons than ever to switch to 3."

No disagreements here.
