Instead it appears our frustration has finally registered with the major players and at last comes news of a format companies are dubbing 'Universal Flash Storage' which could be the answer to our prayers.
Including the high powered trio of Nokia, Samsung and Sony Ericsson (yes, I'm confused about the latter being involved in anything 'universal' too) - as well as having the backing of the JEDEC Solid State Technology Association, Micron Technology, Spansion, ST Microelectronics and Texas Instruments - and the group wants the format to eliminate the plethora of types across the industry and create a consistent standard for both removable and embedded storage.
No specifics on 'UFS' itself were released but the aim is to reduce power consumption while at the same time dramatically increasing performance. The group gives the ambitious example of a 90 minute HD video which it aims to copy to UFS "in seconds".
Interestingly, the group is also thinking big saying that it wants to pressure companies across a wide range of consumer electronics (including digital cameras) to also adopt the standard.
Such all-encompassing plans aren't likely to get results immediately but with a 2009 release timeframe this could be the first step towards making our lives just that little bit easier.
Time to be positive and keep our fingers crossed...
