In moves which are likely to please and anger Apple in relatively similar amounts news is breaking today that the iPhone has passed the 1m sales mark and also seen professional software to unlock it hit retail.

Contrary to popular practice I'm going with the good news first that more than 1m iPhones have been sold since the handset was released on 29 June this year. Perhaps remarkably, in the 10 weeks that have passed since then there has been no official word from Apple regarding global availability (though I'm sure O2 has nabbed it for the UK). Apple has also managed to infuriate early iPhone owners by slashing $200 off the asking price of the 8GB model and then apologised with $100 rebates.

Less positively for the company however is news that the first professional retail tool to unlock the iPhone is now available. Called 'iPhoneSimFree' (what a shock), it costs $50 and is a software only 100 per cent hack which popular tech blog Engadget has already tested and confirmed it works, posting videos of the procedure in the process. At this stage it is unknown whether future Apple iPhone updates will nullify the hack or if owners have finally broken free from that ominous two year AT&T contract.

Finally, in news few are likely to care about, official iPhone ringtones are also available on iTunes from today. Meh.
