Looks like handset manufacturers are starting to leave networks eating their dust...

With the 'SVH-W3000' – or 'UFO' as Samsung is, perhaps aptly, calling it – the company has come up with its first mainstream 7.2Mbps capable mobile phone and in a surprisingly slim form factor.

Scheduled to become part of the Ultra Edition II line, the slider is just 12.9mm thick and comes kitted out with a 2in QVGA screen, (lowish?) 2MP camera, Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP, a microSD slot and integrated media player capable of playing back MP3, AAC, WMA, H.263 and Mpeg4 content.

Typically, it will launch first in the Korean market in 'magic' silver, black 'pearl', violet and sapphire blue and carry a contract free price of 600,000 Won (around £320).

Sadly though, even if a European release is planned it seems we won't be able to take advantage of these breakneck speeds for some time since even our most progressive data network, T-Mobile, has only recently enabled HSDPA at 3.6Mbps (and at a £5pm premium over 1.8Mbps).

If you need to feel better however think about our poor Yank cousins who still have to pay premium rates for a certain Cupertino handset which only offers EDGE...
