3's fantastic monthly deals and generous new roaming rates are sometimes undercut by its paucity of top end, sexy handsets but LG could have a solution at hand...

The Korean company has announced it will bring the 'U990' to the network in October and this beast will deliver no less than a 3in touchscreen with 400 x 240 pixel native resolution, a five megapixel Schneider Kreuznach optics-equipped camera with manually controlled digital zoom and HSDPA which will operate at up to 3.6Mbps through 3's new '3Turbo' service. Take that!

Interestingly, the U990 also features video recording with an unparalleled frame rate of up to 120fps – perfect for action shots and slow motion image playback. Naturally enough, an audio and video multimedia player is also integrated and LG has kindly seen fit to install a web browser too along with the obligatory Bluetooth. Onboard memory isn't vast at 170MB (though better than most) and it sports the usual microSD expansion slot.

With less than six weeks to go before release, those looking for a European equivalent to that phone from Cupertino (see how I didn't name it there? Nice) could have a far more fully featured alternative on their hands...
