Nokia To Add PlayReady DRM To Phones

TrustedReviews NewslettersWe’ve said it before and we’ll say it again; DRM is bad, but still the industry insists on its incorporation into just about everything. So it will probably come as no surprise to anyone that Nokia is going to manage your digital rights with its music download service. In a joint effort with Microsoft, using the PlayReady access software integrated into the Symbian OS, Nokia will allow the transfer of downloaded files between compatible phones and PCs.
Format support is pretty good though, with WMA, AAC and AAC+ audio along with, WMV and H.264 video, although no doubt some would like to see FLAC on that list. Part of the agreement also includes collaborating to improve and simplify mobile access and the use of digital media. While we lament the inclusion of DRM by Nokia, if used correctly it may turn out to be a worthwhile sacrifice in exchange for a decent content access system.
