Normally the release of a new range of stylish, but not particularly functional Nokia phones wouldn’t rouse my interest, but the new ‘Prism’ collection has one unique attention-drawing aspect, making it very interesting indeed. That feature is the type of screen used, namely an OLED, of the type Gordon raved about in April.

While the benefit of the enhanced colour gamut and contrast ratio may be lost on a mobile phone, the size and power reductions will be of more use. Not to mention the promise of the technology proliferating out to a wider range of devices where the advantages can be more widely realised.

The two phones on offer are the Nokia 7900 Prism and the Nokia 7500 Prism. The former has a 2-megapixel camera, 1GB of internal memory for storing music, video and so forth, 3G connectivity so you can download media from Nokia’s online service when launched. They also offer what Nokia calls "living wallpaper” - which changes the display background based on signal strength, time of day and battery life.

The 7500 is a more music oriented device and offers up to 9.5 hours playback and can pull files from a micro-SD card, while elsewhere features are pretty much the same.

Nokia is aiming the two devices at “style-conscious” consumers, although with pricing at €400 for the 7900 and €210 for the 7500 (before tax) you’ll probably find both devices free on your network of choice before long.
