Yes, the WiFi enabled mobile ship has well and truly sailed – heck, even RIM managed to make it aboard – but guess who's paddling hard behind, trying not to take too much of a battering from the propellers...?

Yep, it's that one trick wonder Motorola and its latest outdated plan to try and recapture the global number two spot it recently lost to Samsung: release a mobile phone with integrated wireless!!

Quite incredibly, the codenamed 'Marco' – which naturally looks like just another RAZR/Z3 knock-off – is the company's first ever wireless mobile phone (not including smartphones, of course). Consequently die-hard Motorola fans (how incredibly loyal you've had to be in recent years) will be able to surf away at hotspots just like Nokia, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, HTC ad infinitum owners have been doing for ages.

As for the rest of the phone it's basically a Z3, meaning its quad band, lacks 3G and comes with a 2MP camera. You'll notice the 'Marco' is considerably fatter than the Z3 but that's because wireless is such a modern technology it really adds considerable bulk to a modern device (note to Americans: that was extreme sarcasm).

There's no release date for the handset yet (how could there be... it is sooo cutting edge [yep, sarcasm again]) but Boy Genius – who grabbed this scoop – claims it may not appear until January next year. By which time Motorola will be desperately trying to reclaim its global number three spot from Sony Ericsson...
