With a hearty T-Mobile showcase behind us yesterday I came away with some very interesting news about the handset we've all been waiting for: the 'Vario III' is official and it is coming to the UK on the very precise date of 8 September.

As regular readers of TR will know, the Vario II (which launched in August last year and is based on the HTC TyTN) is one of our favourite fully featured smartphones and the T-Mobile edition – thanks to the network's flat data rate Web n Walk packages – is our favourite incarnation of it. So what will we get with the Vario III?

Based on the HTC Kaiser (also known as the '4550'), the Vario III will bring a number of key benefits such as a rejigged layout, onboard GPS, an improved thumbboard, a 3MP digital camera and Windows Mobile 6. The handset also has a new opening mechanism allowing the screen to be tilted once it is slid out – something designed to make it far more user friendly on flat surfaces.

In addition some modest slimming has gone on with the Vario III measuring 110 x 58 x 18mm compared to the Vario II's 112.5 x 58 x 22mm and the weight has dropped by 16g to 160g. Memory gets an boost too with 256MB ROM now available. In typical T-Mobile style, the company has also added value to the product making CoPilot GPS software available and integrating a Google search tool.

Elsewhere everything is as you were: 400MHz CPU, 2.8in QVGA screen, HSDPA, VGA camera for video calls, wireless b/g, Bluetooth 2.0 and mini USB.

If you were impressed by the Vario II or simply have yet to enjoy the pleasures of a fully featured, top of the line smartphone then I suggest you start saving and fast... you've only got 5 weeks.
