Short but sweet news today: existence of the first Blackberry with WiFi has been found!

The source – as is so often the case – is the ever reliable FCC (Federal Communications Commission) which has just approved a new Blackberry model with WiFi broadcasts in the 2.4GHz, 5.4GHz and 5.8GHz ranges which means it will be 802.11a/b/g compatible.

The FFC approval also notes the as yet unnamed handset is tri-band (a 3G and WiFi enabled Blackberry would just be too much to take) and comes with Bluetooth and a microSD slot. That's pretty much zero to go on of course.

Now RIM CEO Jim Balsillie slightly spoilt this spot since he confirmed the company would release a WiFi enabled Blackberry before the end of the year, but declarations and cold, hard hardware (linguistic spaghetti?) are two very different things my minions.

So with the Pearl and Curve (above) already widening Blackberry's appeal into the consumer space WiFi is likely to help it take another large step. Perhaps there is more than one handset that is going to capture the public's imagination this year...
