Samsung Slaps 4GB On Mobile Phone Chip

You may remember that 8GB NAND Flash module Sammy came up with in March, well here's how you start putting that technology to good use.


Three months on the manufacturer of pretty much everything, ever has come up with a 4GB multi chip package (MCP) specifically for mobile phones which, for the first time, would (arguably) forgo the need for an external memory card slot and also eliminate the need to develop interface software for the assorted brands of NAND found in most handsets.

Using the company's patented 'moviMCP' branding Samsung will throw this miniature all-in-one at its and others' handsets and market its space saving benefits.

"We’ve now perfected a memory chip that allows handset manufacturers to significantly reduce development time while deploying an extremely robust design that will result in higher performance for smaller phones, with higher storage capacities,” said Jim Elliott, Sammy's Director of Flash Marketing.

As for the chip itself it consists of two 16Gb (gigabit) NAND flash chips (the 4GB) and a controller, together with a 1Gb mobile DRAM chip to support the processor and a 2Gb NAND flash chip for general handset operations. In essence an extremely simple way to see this would be like Centrino for phones (but without the WiFi).

OEMs are currently sampling the 4GB MCP and with the 3G mobile phone market – the main target for Sammy's chip – expected to reach 392 million units in 2007 there's one heck of a large cake there. One from which Sammy looks set to take a gluttonous piece...
