Mobile network and BT's most regretted sell-off O2 has announced a scheme of incentives to encourages customers not to upgrade their handsets.

Citing the damage such a rapid roll-over of hardware causes to the environment (that word of 2007, again) it has decided to offer customers a £95 phone credit and £10 donation on their behalf to the Energy Saving Trust should you decide to stick with your current mobile. A second option for the particularly mean spirited is to take £100 credit and give nothing to the charity! Picking either option ties you to O2 for a further minimum term of 12 months.

As for PAYG customers O2 hasn't forgotten about you either. Should you buy an O2 PAYG sim for your existing handset then the company will send off a £5 donation to the EST.

All these offers begin from 28 April.

Now, noble as these options may be I can't see too many customers – at least the tech savvy ones – taking it up. After all, a new top of the range handset on a 12/18 month contract can be worth easily over £300 so either a) upgrading then selling the handset on eBay and giving a larger donation to the EST or b) upgrading then selling your old handset on eBay and giving a larger donation to EST - would seem like smarter options.

That's probably not the way to do it, but they do get the charity more money!

Kudos to O2 though since it is trying and watch this space as other networks chase after it like particularly vapid sheep.
