Five months on from 3's all singing and dancing launch of X-Series it has taken the reins off.

Consequently all new and existing 3 customers can get access to the flat rate data surfing package for just £5 per month. There is no restriction on which handset you can use (provided it can do web surfing!) and no fixed rate contract to sign on top of your voice package.

"Building on the innovation and success of X-Series, our latest mobile internet package gives our customers freedom to use the internet on the move and to choose a handset which really works for them" said John Penberthy-Smith, a wonderfully named Marketing Director at 3.

Previously customers were restricted to the camera-less Sony Ericsson W950 touch screen handset or Nokia's N73 which is, well... a Nokia. X-Series services include Skype, Sling Media, Orb and MSN along with packages from Yahoo, Google and eBay.

When 3 launched in March 2003 I have to admit I thought it was rather silly, not anymore...
