While Sony has long fought a losing battle with Apple in the mp3 player market it is soon to encounter its old enemy in the mobile phone market. The key to Apple's product strategy: clean simple product lines, the key to Sony Ericsson's: flood the market!

So now we have yet more additions to the SE Walkman range, the slider W580i and the clamshell Z750. Despite sporting different form factors, these two midrangers share mostly similar features: Sony's nifty Walkman phone interface, two megapixel cameras, QVGA screens, Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP, support for MP3, AAC, AAC_, e-AAC+ and WMA music formats and Memory Stick Micro expansion slots.

Where they differ is in connectivity with the Z750 coming with HSDPA and the W580i limited to GSM and EDGE. Interestingly – though not for we Brits – the Z750 will be the first HSDPA enabled phone Sony Ericsson ships to the US, bless em.

For such clear mid-market devices you may be surprised to hear SE won't be releasing them until Q3, by which time the iPhone should be out across the pond and holding these devices up by their shorts and spanking their little bottoms. True these bantam weights were never meant to go head-to-head with Apple's heavyweight but now Sony Ericsson has freed up its R&D it needs to get on its A Game.
