If there is one company I dislike as much as Motorola and have disliked for far longer it is people’s champion Nokia. That said Nokia has made a far brighter start to 3GSM than MTRLA.

The obvious reason for this is the company’s main announcement: the E90 Communicator (above) – the long awaited follow up to the 9300i. Frustratingly, the Finns decided to give away only fragments about the device but we do know it will offer WiFi and HSDPA as well as a screen “capable of displaying the full width of a web page at once” (though the actual resolution was kept quiet).

On the multimedia side of things the E90 will sport an impressive 3.2MP auto focus camera with flash and a VGA secondary cam for video conferencing. An audio and video player is installed and – in what I suspect is a sign of things to come this year – an integrated GPS receiver. Look for it in Q2, which I’m sure many of you will.

Also doing a good job of wowing the crowd is the ‘N77’ (left) a DVB-H compatible mobile TV phone. You’ll be watching programmes on a 2.4in 16m colour screen and while it isn’t 3G compatible – which makes me question the quality of streaming – it does support EDGE. MP3, AAC, AAC+, eAAC+ and WMA audio formats will play nicely on this thing and can be played through integrated stereo speakers while a 2MP shooter rounds things off. It will also surface in Q2.

On the businessy side Nokia rounded off with two upgrades: the E61i (middle) and E65 slider (right). Both are quad band and have WiFi plus the company’s ‘Intellisync Mobile Suite 8.0’ synchronisation software. The E61i – with its full QWERTY keyboard – is designed specifically for email usage and can handle Exchange, Blackberry Connect, Good Mobile Messaging and Seven Mobile Mail systems. The E65’s trick it that it works with corporate telephony systems from Cisco, Alcatel and Avaya.

The E65 launches immediately with the E61i matching the E90 and N77 by appearing sometime into Q2. Excited? We’ll stick with moderately aroused.
