There was a thought I had before writing this story that perhaps I should skip it because you’d all seen enough Chocolate phones by now, but then I realised: “No, that’s just me”.

So the latest in a long line of incrementally different handsets is the ‘KE800 Chocolate Platinum’ which is a (much needed) upgrade to the original Chocolate. Being an update, rather than a whole new handset, the KE800 (I find it hard to spell Platinum repeatedly) hasn’t changed a lick on the outside but look deeper and you’ll find way more functionality.

For a start, the KE800 sports a two megapixel camera with autofocus, night mode and multi-burst shooting and gains a long overdue memory card expansion slot – even if I’m slightly confused that it is for SD not microSD cards.

Whatever the format, however, it could come into regular use since the handset now has MP3, Mpeg4 and AAC codec support plus stereo Bluetooth functionality. Onboard memory has also been boosted from 128MB to 256MB. Elsewhere there is an FM radio and voice and keyword search for finding your favourite tracks.

LG isn’t giving away any release information on the KE800 yet but since it brings the original Chocolate kicking and screaming into mid 2006 I can’t see it hanging back for long.
