Samsung Gets In On Touchscreen Mobile Action

Samsung is the third company this month to announce a primarily touchy feely controlled mobile phone but – unlike LG’s KE850 and Apple’s uber hyped iPhone – on the face of it this appears to be most conventional of the trio.
Only you’d be wrong.
While the KE850 and iPhone may look more dynamic, the ‘SCH-W559’ actually employs a wacky technology which will provide the user with ‘tactile feedback’ when the screen is touched. It is called ‘VibeTonz’ (licensed from developer Immersion) and works by synchronising the phone’s vibration functionality with user strokes. Different intensities and even rhythms can be applied so that a gentle buzz greets each contact while incoming calls and messages can be set to send out different vibrations from different contacts.
Aside from this curious, but perhaps ultimately rather useful, technology little else is known about the W559 other than it has a 260k QVGA screen and the ‘Anycall’ branding suggests it will be tested in the Korean market first.
With that country’s famous passion for all things manga and all things schoolgirl we’re sure to see some worrying ‘unique’ apps that will make ‘full use’ of VibeTonz. Shudder.
