This may be coming in slightly late for the keen tech spotters amongst you but since I was on holiday during December I missed a device which is suddenly extremely significant following Apple’s launch of the iPhone.

The ‘KE850’ from LG caught my eye this morning and – as you’ll see what the photography – is remarkably similar to Apple’s much anticipated and, consequently, much heralded device.

The KE850 is being developed in partnership with Prada (it has already won the ‘iF Product Design Award 2007’) and the outer appearance is virtually identical to the iPhone with the facia almost completely filled by the wide aspect touch screen display. The resolution of the KE850 is similarly new at 240 x 400 pixels but it doesn’t quite measure up to the iPhone’s 320 x 480 pixels and though it is also clearly finger, rather than stylus, driven it is unlikely to sport anything similar to Apple’s revolutionary ‘Multi-touch’ navigation system.

Photos also reveal there is a camera onboard the KE850 but its megapixel rating is unknown as are the connectivity details and operating system so I can’t yet say whether this is a smartphone or simply another stylish mobile. Either way however with a mooted release date of late March/April we should be getting our hands on it a lot sooner than Apple’s new box of tricks.

In fact, looking at the big picture, what is more interesting than this phone specifically is that is proves other manufacturers are already thinking along the same lines as Apple. And with the iPhone unlikely to debut across Europe until the end of the year (at best) this will provide significant food for thought for Steve Jobs…
