So the iPhone is finally here, but it’s not what everyone was expecting…

Out of the blue (or perhaps not if we’d all checked the patent office) Linksys has announced its new ‘iPhone’ range of VoIP handsets.

It transpires that the Cisco division has actually held the ‘iPhone’ trademark since 2000 when it inherited it from a company called Infogear which it purchased back in 1996. So, essentially, all this Apple iPhone branding malarkey should have never got off the ground…!?!

Instead we are greeted today by Linksys’ ‘iPhone WIP320’ (above) a wireless g handset for use with Skype which enables users to work the uber-popular service from anywhere with a wireless access point. It will hit the US immediately with global availability coming in Q1 2007 and a £102.99 UK RRP.

Joining the WIP320 is the ‘iPhone CIT400’ a dual function device which can be connected directly to a landline as well as use Skype. Unlike the WIP320 it has no wireless functionality instead employing short range cordless technology for use in and around the home. The CIT400 also hits US stores right now with the rest of us seeing it in Q1. £89.99 is its price of asking.

So now that’s all settled expect the web to go into overdrive about what Apple will call its impending baby. I suggest ‘ApplePhone’, or ‘aPhone’ or how about ‘OverhypedPhone’…?
