Praise be! Halleluiah! I can’t flippin’ believe it! Motorola came up with a new idea…

It’s called the ‘Motofone F3’ and for one it doesn’t use a stupid shortened words like RAZR, SLVR or PEBL in its title and for the other it does something… well… inventive!?!

I’m still reeling from shock here but the idea of using ‘E-Ink’ - the technology behind e-paper (a monochrome, high res, non-volatile panel designed to be easy on the eye) - to save on both power draw and cost as well as keep the handset super slim (it’s just 9mm thick) is rather an ingenious one.

Of course this means the F3 has to forgo a number of features that have become common place in today’s mobiles: integrated camera, web browsing, picture viewing, etc but – techies aside – it appears many of you don’t use these features anyway. Instead we get a GSM phone which concentrates on being a phone, a nigh revolutionary concept and it uses a large text size to add further appeal to older generations.

Sadly Motorola has negated to reveal much else about what the F3 can do but from the keypad it’s clear text messaging is supported and I’m sure there’ll be a phone book. Predictably developing world countries will be the F3’s first port of call (India gets it immediately) but I would argue it has major relevance for our markets as well and hopefully we’ll get news of a European release before long.

In fact, the only thing that has stopped me from passing out altogether is that the world’s laziest design team has clearly once more been taking a siesta during its design:

“What’s that? A new handset you say? Enie. Meanie. Minie. Moe. Use the SLVR.”
