I don’t like covering rumours – unless I hear it straight from the horse’s mouth – so I’ve tried to steer clear of web tittle-tattle that Apple has placed a massive 12m order for iPhones in the last week.

Problem for me is this is one rumour that won’t go away and with each passing day more so-called facts are coming to the surface. Now according to The Commercial Times, an actual creditable source, manufacturer Hon Hai (more commonly known as Foxconn) has won the contract for the mega order and we can expect handsets to arrive in the first half of 2007 with an announcement likely in January. All of which would tie-in with what I reported last month.

This makes the MacWorld expo the seemingly ideal place for Jobs to do one of his oh-so-over-the-top unveilings but I suggest we try not to get ahead of ourselves. Especially since latest spec gossip now has the inevitable multimedia capable device sporting a two megapixel camera when I had heard three megapixels were a shoe-in.

Speaking of which Apple itself seems to have picked up the media’s dirty little habit of premature declarations after both Air France and KLM came forward to say neither has agreed any deal to install iPod compatible connectors in their planes.

“It’s very premature what Apple are saying,” said a KLM spokesperson. “We have no idea if this is technically feasible, if its financially viable, or if customers want it. At this moment, we have absolutely no intention of introducing it on board.”

Tut-tut.

Note: Fanboy mock-up above. Fingers crossed Apple has seen it ;)
