While monthly customers get access to all the latest mobile tech-phone-wizardry the poor pre pay bunch get a dog’s breakfast consisted of mono screened Nokias, hideous clamshell Sagems and bulbous Sendos. O2 thinks it is perhaps time you long sufferers were passed an olive branch.

Salvation comes in the form of the O2 ‘Ice’, possibly one of the first affordable fashion phones to be made available to the penny pinchers among you. Specs are surprisingly good with the handset being 3G and sporting a 176 x 220 resolution 65k colour display (ooooh colour pre pay minions, colour!).

A 1.3MP camera also makes it under the hood along with the prerequisite VGA secondary cam for video calls. In fact, dimensions of 117 x 49 x 14mm and a weight of just 92g could even lead pre payers into the uncharted territory of envious glances. Things don’t stop there either since MP3 playback, Bluetooth and USB connectivity, 32MB of internal memory and even a microSD slot all make it onboard.

Costing just £99 on pre pay the Ice is really something of a bargain and it’ll be available from the O2 website in September with direct and indirect channels getting it from October. Contract phobiacs must feel like all their Christmases have come at once. After all it’s rather like presenting Stan Collymore with a marriage proposal from Kate Beckinsale.
