Every year Apple pulls something out of the bag for its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). We’ve already reported Leopard is scheduled to make an appearance, now the latest illustrious member added to the guest could be the long awaited iPhone.

Leaked onto the web yesterday were yet more pictures of the so called ‘iChat Mobile’. Naturally these could be the work of a 14 year old acne infected computer wizz with too much time on his hands but nevertheless rumours simply won’t die that WWDC (7 August) will be the event to mark the iPhone/iChat Mobile’s public debut.

Let’s look at the facts: Apple is a member of the Khronos Group (a mobile phone industry consortium), has had CFO Peter Oppenheimer confirm “we’re not sitting around doing nothing", and the Apple Insider states that analysing the latest iPod Updater with a hex editor reveals code such as t_feature_app_PHONE_APP, kPhoneSignalStrength, clPhoneCallModel, clPhoneCallHistoryModel, prPhoneSettingsMenu and more.

So what does this tell us? Well, if you’re a sometimes wildly cynical, sometimes wildly optimistic journo like myself the answer is everything and nothing. Certainly, an iPhone is coming, but I won’t be putting much stock in when. Still this is an industry that is nothing if not progressive, surprising and downright infuriating let alone WWDC.

Either way, we’ll all know in four days and we’ll keep our fingers tightly on its misfiring pulse. I just hope it doesn’t look like the half baked Apple Remote above. Come on Apple, we all know this is what the fans want…
