It’s about time the RAZR’s reign was over, but is NEC the unlikely company to take Motorola’s throne?

Having investigated the L1 (still a codename) my answer is maybe. The best news is that at just 1.19cm thick it is even slimmer than the most hyped mobile phone in history, but the downside is it will probably be outclassed by the new RAZR V3x since both are scheduled to arrive around Chrimbo.

That said the L1’s 1.3 megapixel camera is not to be sniffed at, though the 600mAh battery sounds like a hefty trade off for a few less millimetres and will probably require daily recharging. Onboard is 32MB of memory and while there is no word on whether it takes flash memory, the fact that it also works as an MP3 player suggests it may.

Like all clamshell phones the L1 has two displays: it chooses a monochrome blue backlit one for the exterior and a 65ker inside. No great shakes, but then again neither were any of the features on the RAZR when it came out. And like catwalk models (excluding Adriana Lima, I’m sure!), it is purely what is on the outside that counts in this market sector.

So if you’re a hot pants wearing honey (and if so, why are you reading this site and not Cosmo?) firstly email me and secondly this could be for you. If you don’t wear hot pants and instead are just friendly techno geeks in need of some fashion guidance like most of us, then you’ll probably pass it up anyway for something with a few more millimetres and better specs.
